The East built a 20-point lead and survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the West, 85-82, in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Basketball Game on Monday night at the Novant Health Field House in Greensboro.

Ameya Brown (Terry Sanford) led the East with 17 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, while Brook Evans (South Central) added nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

The West led 25-22 after the first quarter, but the East took control with a decisive second period, outscoring the West 27-10 to build a 49-35 halftime advantage. The East pushed its lead to as many as 20 points in the third quarter and carried a 76-63 advantage into the fourth.

The West made one final push, holding the East to nine fourth-quarter points and cutting the deficit to one possession, but the East held on for the three-point victory.

Turnovers proved to be a major difference. The East committed just 11 turnovers while forcing the West into 25, producing a 26-12 advantage in points off turnovers. The East also held a 46-40 edge in points in the paint and received 43 points from its bench.

Brown finished 6-of-14 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers. Claire Barber (Green Level) added 11 points, three assists, and two steals, while Kira Jones (Rocky Mount) scored 10 points.

Evans was a force on the glass, grabbing eight offensive and eight defensive rebounds. Azariah Brunson (E.E. Smith) added nine points for the East.

Tiara Thompson (West Rowan) and Ma-Kaela Gidney (Hickory Ridge) led the West with 15 points each. Thompson also grabbed seven rebounds, while Gidney connected on four 3-pointers.

Khiara Culliver (Maiden) turned in one of the most complete performances for the West, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots. Morgan Odom (Southeast Guilford) added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The West shot 47.8% from the field, compared to 36.5% for the East, but the East created more opportunities with its defensive pressure and work on the offensive glass. The East attempted 85 field goals to the West’s 69, and finished with 16 offensive rebounds.
